How Our Alerts Are Classified
Every alert is assigned a source classification and a travel advisory level. These serve different purposes: the source classification explains where the information comes from, while the travel advisory level indicates the potential urgency of the reported situation.
Source Classifications
Tier 1 — Official Sources
Information issued or directly confirmed by an official authority, such as a government travel advisory or emergency service. These sources provide formal guidance and are labelled “Official source”.
Tier 2 — Verified News
Automated summaries of reporting from established news organisations, with links to the original articles. These alerts help users identify relevant developments quickly and are labelled “Automated summary of reporting by publishers”.
Travel Advisory Levels
- Avoid Travel
An imminent or life-threatening danger. Act immediately and follow official instructions.
- Reconsider Travel
A serious, credible travel alert. Take protective action and monitor official channels.
- Take Care
A credible but contained travel alert. Stay alert and review your safety plans.
- Be Aware
A minor or geographically limited event that warrants awareness.
- Clear
Relevant context or background information with no immediate action indicated.
Travel advisory levels are intended to support situational awareness and decision-making. They do not guarantee the safety of any location or individual, and users should always consider the circumstances on the ground and any official instructions.
Our Sources
Official advice, verified reporting and developing updates offer complementary perspectives on travel conditions.
- Official Guidance: Government travel advisories, public safety notices, and statements from relevant authorities provide formal instructions and country-specific risk information. Their scope and date matter: guidance may apply to a particular area, activity, or period rather than an entire country.
- Verified News Reporting: Established journalistic sources provide reporting on events, travel alerts, and developments affecting travellers. Automated summaries help make this reporting easier to scan, while original articles provide the fuller context, attribution, and any subsequent corrections. This classification does not mean every detail has been independently verified by Travel Safety Watch.
- Developing Stories: Headline discovery and public reporting feeds surface emerging developments for monitoring. Early reports can be incomplete or change as more information becomes available. Developing reports are distinguished from confirmed alerts; discovery alone does not establish credibility, travel advisory level, or immediate danger.
Source classification, verification status, and travel advisory level describe different aspects of an alert. An official source is not automatically an indication of Avoid Travel danger, and an early report should not be treated as confirmed simply because its subject is serious.
Where available, alerts retain links to the underlying material so users can review the original wording, publication time, location, and context. Multiple headlines may refer to the same event rather than separate events or independent corroboration. We encourage users to consult relevant authorities and consider the latest available information when assessing a potential travel alert.
Transparency and Limitations
Our priority is to make relevant safety information easier to find, understand, and verify. We are committed to transparent sourcing, clear alert classifications, and an honest distinction between reported information and official guidance.
Users should be aware of the following limitations:
- Automated Processing: Information collection and summarisation are automated. Errors, omissions, delays, and inaccuracies may occur.
- Source Verification: A link to a news report or community report does not, by itself, mean that every detail has been independently verified by Travel Safety Watch.
- Mapping Limitations: Geographic locations and map markers are based on available source information and may be incomplete or imprecise. A map marker does not establish that an area is safe or unsafe.
- Coverage Limitations: Our monitoring cannot capture every event, travel alert, or development. The absence of an alert does not mean the absence of risk.
- Official Guidance: Travel Safety Watch complements, but does not replace, government advisories, emergency services, professional security advice, or local instructions.
Travel Safety Watch is an information and situational-awareness service, not an emergency response provider. In an immediate emergency, contact the relevant local emergency services and follow official instructions.
